Rob goes to
the Palace
A letter arrived saying I had been chosen to represent
the Boys' Brigade at a garden party to be held at Buckingham Palace. I was one
of twenty boys from different companies all over Britain.
I caught the 7 a.m. coach to Victoria, it was a grey and drizzly morning but
this didn't dampen my spirits. On arriving at Victoria I studied the map (my
expedition skills were very useful), and then headed for Westminster Chapel
where I was to report for my duties and meet the other boys. We were briefed on
our duties and then walked the short distance to the Palace where lunch was
served.
My duties were to assist the wheelchair users to the garden party from the
entrance, this was very enjoyable and interesting as I met lots of people who
asked questions about Boys' Brigade. The afternoon brightened up and the Queen
arrived, wearing blue, her arrival was announced by the playing of the National
Anthem by one of the military bands in attendance.
A memorable event of the afternoon was when one of the Queens' corgis decided to
go exploring, and I was asked to help retrieve it. The trouble being that the
corgi knew his way round much better than all of us but in the end it was
returned safely.
The day ended back at Westminster Chapel where we were given a certificate to
thank us for our help. We all said our goodbyes and I walked back to Victoria
station for the coach home. It was a long day but one I'll never forget.
